Safeguarding
At Fairisle Junior School, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do.
Our comprehensive safeguarding and P.S.H.E. curriculum aims to ensure that all children from Year 3 to Year 6 develop the knowledge and skills they need to keep themselves safe, both online and in their communities. Through carefully planned lessons, children learn about online safety, including understanding online identity, recognising scams, managing digital wellbeing, and using AI responsibly. We teach pupils about the different types of abuse (physical, emotional, sexual and neglect), harassment and grooming, in an age-appropriate manner. We focus on ensuring children know how to get help if they're worried about themselves or someone else.
Our curriculum also covers anti-bullying, hate crime, mental health and wellbeing, friendships, bereavement, peer pressure, first aid, and staying safe around potential hazards such as water, roads, fire and railways. Additionally, our age-appropriate Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education programme helps children understand body changes, puberty, periods, healthy relationships and consent.
To enhance our safeguarding curriculum, we may use external providers to deliver workshops. Examples of these may include: the NSPCC delivering workshops on safeguarding and The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service delivering workshops on fire safety.
Please see our safeguarding curriculum overview to find out more about what the children learn.
We are committed to creating a safe environment where every child feels confident to speak up and knows where to turn for support. Children are encouraged to always talk to a trusted adult if they are worried about themselves or someone else. We teach the children that ChildLine is another place to seek help.
The NSPCC Pants Song is used to teach children that privates are private. Click on the image below to play the song:
When we teach children about bereavement, we use a range of books to support their understanding:
