At Fairisle Junior School, children receive a weekly hour-long music lesson delivered by specialist music teachers from our partner: Discover the Music Ltd. Discover the Music is taught by specialist music teachers from the Showcase Music School, who created the programme that we use. Discover the Music provides a broad and balanced curriculum, where children are exposed to a range of instruments and techniques to improve their understanding of the world of music.

We aim to provide children with an engaging, progressive and modern musical environment. In Year 3, children learn to play the recorder in preparation for Year 4, where they are guided through the orchestral world of playing. Children are split into six groups of instruments, including trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, glockenspiel and guitar. In Year 5, children focus largely on cultural elements of music, focussing on increased rhythmic skills using voice and percussion. This prepares the children for their final year when they combine their voices and a range of other instruments to cover popular songs, performing together and combining the skills of their entire musical journey. 

Throughout the entire programme, and across all year groups, children are provided with challenges in composing music, improvising music, listening to and appraising music from a wide range of cultures and genres, and, each year group has the opportunity to showcase their singing talents. Each year, the children build upon their prior learning and broaden their knowledge using the skills: performing, composing, theory, evaluating, personal development and cultural development. In providing children with plenty of opportunities to develop their musical awareness, we hope to instil an intrinsic love for the subject.

MusicFest

Each year, in the Summer Term, the wider school community comes together to celebrate the vibrant musical culture across our school. We prepare all of our pupils for a big outdoor 'festival' style performance for families to come and enjoy. All the children present highlights of their learning in class music lessons from across the school year and the best bit is that pupils are accompanied by a live band of musicians!

Unfortunately, the rain stopped our outside performance this year. However, we did not let that stop the performance and the children thoroughly enjoyed showcasing their musical skills indoors. Click below to listen to MusicFest 2026.
